A New Era of Transparency for Sexual Assault Kits

Pennsylvania is launching Track-Kit, a secure, cloud-based system that allows sexual assault kits (SAKs) to be tracked at every stage of the process, from collection at a health care facility, through transfer to law enforcement, to lab analysis and secure storage. Developed by the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to meet the requirements of Act 122 of 2024, Track-Kit gives survivors a confidential, no-cost way to follow their kit’s progress without navigating multiple agencies on their own.

At NOVA, our Forensic Nursing Program provides compassionate, trauma-informed medical forensic examinations for survivors of sexual and physical assault, ensuring evidence is collected with care while prioritizing each person’s health, safety, and choice. For survivors who choose to have a sexual assault kit collected, Track-Kit adds another layer of transparency and support by allowing them to stay informed about where their kit is in the process.

Each kit will be tracked using a unique identifier, such as a kit number, so survivors can check their kit’s status without providing personal identifying information. Kit status updates are available at each step, helping reduce the uncertainty that so often accompanies this process and offering reassurance that evidence is being handled properly. Survivors can also opt in to receive automatic notifications as their kit moves forward. It’s important to note that Track-Kit provides status updates only; it does not include forensic testing results, which survivors should obtain from the investigating agency.

Beyond supporting survivors, Track-Kit strengthens the system as a whole. By creating a consistent, statewide method for logging key dates, it improves accountability among health care providers, law enforcement, and forensic laboratories, reduces the risk of kits being lost or left untested, and encourages more coordinated practices across the Commonwealth.

Track-Kit’s pilot launch begins in this summer, with full implementation expected by the end of 2026.
